We now have living frog eggs (Rana pipiens) and Praying Mantids (Ootheca) cases in my room.  Let's hope we get some babies.  The above picture is what the adult frog will look like.  : ).  The frog's common name is Northern Leopard frog.  Click on the frog above to hear the male frog's mating call.  Only the male's sing.

Frogs are amphibians which means 2 lives and will go from egg to tadpoles to frogs.

Male frogs have different calls for their mates.  Click here to listen to some frog calls in the Chicagoland area.

Praying mantids are insects that undergo incomplete metamorphosis going from eggs to nymphs to adults.  The nymphs look just like tiny adults.

The week of Feb. 15th is the Great American Bird Count and you are going to participate!  We need to first look at some Illinois birds and listen to what they sound like.  In class you are to make a book with illustrations, physical descriptions, and descriptions of habitat for 15 of Illinois most common birds.  Also, you should fully describe how birds are classified (aves), how to identify them, and their morphology.

Discuss how to make your yard and bird and butterfly sanctuary.  And look for and make a feeder to show the class.
